Literacy Playground Teacher
Seasonal Contract Position, Summer 2026

We are inviting applications for three (3) contract position educators to deliver 18 days of literacy programming from July 6-29 for 24 grade two students who will be moving into grade three in September. After a successful pilot last year, we are looking to offer this intervention program again this year.

Preference will be given to educators with solid primary grade experience with strong, balanced literacy programming confidence and a working understanding of literacy intervention.
Program teachers will be expected to plan for and deliver targeted phonetic instruction and effective guided reading lessons each day, with the goal of improving student reading skills and confidence. Our goal is to build foundational skills and increase literacy confidence for each student to reach or surpass grade level reading by the end of the program. All materials will be provided, and teachers will be expected to participate in four (equivalent to two days) Literacy PD sessions in June to help ensure all instructors are delivering the program with a similar philosophy and shared methodologies. Educators will have outdoor supervision responsibilities as assigned for the program duration.

Successful candidates will provide contracted services to the Friends of Foothills Schools Foundation at a rate of $271/day (18 days of instruction + two days PD). Instructors must be able to commit to all the days of the program July 6-29 plus PD days. Please note that successful candidates will have to claim this payment and pay taxes on these earnings themselves.

To apply, send a brief outline resume that highlights your experience with phonetic instruction, guided reading instruction and reading intervention. Please also include a personal statement of reading philosophy or approach. We will consider candidates with a strong desire to grow their reading intervention and literacy instruction abilities if applicants indicate a willingness to learn and hone these teaching skills. Selected candidates will have an interview with Janet and Foundation board representative(s) as part of the selection process.

Thank you for considering this summer employment opportunity.
Applications and questions should be directed to Janet Jack, Literacy Playground Coordinator jackj@shaw.ca by May 17, 2026.
